A friend of mine asked me how he can free up some space on his hard disk. With these simple tips I gave him, he managed to free up 50 GB from his hard disk! In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to do it!

Step 1

Remove any unnecessary games or programs that you don’t use anymore. Go to Start > Control Panel > Program and Features and uninstall some apps!

Step 2

Next we’ll perform a disk cleanup. Go to Start > My Computer and right click on Hard Disk and select Properties. Then, near the 3D pie chart on the right click Disk Cleanup. Select the files from the list that you want to delete and click ok to delete them.

Step 3

Restore Points can occupy a lot of your hard disk, so by removing them and leaving only the last restore point, frees up a lot of space. In the Disk Cleanup window, click on the More Options tab and then in the System Restore and Shadow Copies click the Clean up button to delete all but the last restore point.

Step 4

In your browser you can determine how much space of your hard disk can the browser use to store online content. By storing files on your hard disk,  the browser can load up pages much faster, because the content is already saved on your hard disk. Every browser has this setting, I’ll show you how to do it on Mozilla Firefox.

In Firefox, go to Tools > Options > Advanced tab > Network tab. In the Offline Storage section, input how much space (MB) should the browser use for this activity, then click ok.

Step 5

Download a program called TuneUp Utilities. It has a 30 day trial which is fully functional.

In TuneUp, go to Free Disk Space and select Unnecessary files and backups. You can select which categories to be removed and then click the clean button. You can also remove Windows functions that you don’t use if you want.

Check out the software, it has many functionalities, such as increasing performance, defragmenting disks, check hard drive for errors, styling windows, removing start-up programs and more.

Extra tip: Download Spyware Doctor and Ad-Aware for spyware removal.

Conclusion

By applying these steps, free space on your hard disk should’ve improved significantly, especially if it’s the first time you have performed these steps. Make it a habit to perform these steps every once in a while! Your hard disk will be grateful!
