I recently came across the need to write circular text, when I was designing the cd cover of my band’s cd, and decided that this task could make a useful tutorial for you guys.

Step 1

Create a new document in Photoshop, size: 800px x 800px.

Step 2

Take the Eliptical Marquee Tool

and create a perfect circle. To create a perfect circle, while dragging, hold down the Shift key.

step2

Step 3

Create a New Layer (Layer>New>Layer) and fill it with black.

step3

Step 4

Take the Ellipse Tool

and create another perfect circle, size of your preference. That is the shape that the circular text will have.

step4

Step 5

Take the Horizontal Type Tool

click over the inner circle line and with a white colour, write whatever you want.

step5

Step 6

You can then delete the layer you created with the ellipse tool.

After you’ve mastered that, the possibilities are endless. Here are a few more examples of this powerful tool:

  • Hey, very useful tutorial, thanks!

    Just a tip -

for Step 4 – Take the Ellipse Tool and create another perfect circle, size of your preference…

It would be helpful to mention that you should ensure that the Shape setting is selected. Otherwise it forms only an ellipse and not a shape layer which is what you would need to be able to write on.

    Cheers!
